Research has shown that students become more engaged readers when they 1) read frequently, and 2) read about topics of their own choosing. Accordingly, students in this week-long class will explore a variety of relevant, interesting, and challenging texts combined with in-depth analysis and lively discussion. Readings will include textbook selections relevant to this age group, as well as works of literature including Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson; Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenback; and a selection of poems by classic American writers like Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, and Edgar Allan Poe.
