Know Better, Do Better

Untraditional tutoring

You may have noticed we changed our name recently, from Absolute Value Tutoring, to Absolute Value Academy. We felt our name should accurately reflect what we do, which is much more than traditional tutoring. Of course, we teach subjects such as mathematics, science, writing and SAT preparation, but we also have a variety of other classes to help students of all ages and interests. We have classes you likely won’t find at other educational centers–from chess mastery to video game programming. So much more is out there to learn, beyond the staple courses you take in school.

Here are some of the unique courses we offer and the interesting ways they can benefit students.

Fortnite (Gaming and Programming)

The gaming industry continues to experience massive growth and is projected to be worth $312 billion by 2027. Gaming isn’t just a fun pastime–it can be a lucrative career with a lot of opportunities to learn. Fortnite is one of the most popular online multiplayer games because it constantly evolves and adapts to player’s needs, traits that game programmers and developers need to succeed. Turn your passion for gaming into something more by learning the behind-the-scenes programming that makes these games possible.

Chess

The benefits of playing chess are plenty. The strategy-based game challenges players to plan ahead, strengthen their concentration and focus, and think creatively. Research shows chess players have strong memory skills, particularly auditory memory, which is the ability to remember things you learned through hearing. It can even help ward off dementia, since the game requires you to challenge your memory and continually test your critical thinking skills.

We’re running several chess classes this summer. Check out this page to learn more.

Dungeons and Dragons

Referred to as “the world’s greatest roleplaying game,” Dungeons and Dragons is a storytelling, decision-making game where players explore fantasy worlds and compete to win quests. It’s also a fantastic way to develop your creative, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Another interesting benefit–it’s been shown to boost social-emotional learning skills and build self-confidence.

Lifelong Learning

The importance of continuing to learn as you age cannot be overstated. Countless studies show the cognitive and social benefits for older adults who learn new skills and topics. During a recent study, researchers tested the memory and attention span of older adults before and after enrolling in weekly classes. The results were remarkable. After completing courses on language, art, technology and more, the students scored much higher in cognitive tests and continued to show long-term improvements. This is good news, especially in a country where 73% of adults consider themselves “lifelong learners.” People have plenty of reasons to continue their education in adulthood. Learning something new can help you land an exciting job or earn a promotion, find a new hobby, strengthen social connections and improve overall wellness. Many people believe classes are for full-time students in school pursuing a degree, whether that be a high school diploma or a PhD. The truth is, continuing education courses are for everyone, regardless of the end goal. At Absolute Value Academy, the courses go far beyond ‘traditional tutoring.’ Someone looking to learn about art can take a course on digital illustration or filmmaking. People who need help using technology — whether it’s how to use an iPhone or how to keep your private information secure online — can benefit from lessons. Even taking a class to become a master chess player is a way to engage your mind as a lifelong learner. No matter what you decide to study, scientists have made it clear: the best way to stay sharp as you age is to learn something new. Absolute Value Academy is here to help you do just that.
